Bringing Baffin Bay Sarita Rain Garden

Baffin Bay is considered the jewel of the Texas Coast; however, high bacterial loads and excess nutrients have impaired the watershed, threatening the health of the people and organisms on which it relies.  Working with local entities to increase green stormwater infrastructure is a priority. Actions presented at the Bringing Back Baffin Bay Sarita Rain Garden Project can show benefits, both through installation of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and community education and outreach.
This Rain Garden is installed next to the Sarita Texas Elementary School's campus, an area with a lot of impervious surface and runoff. It is designed to collect rainwater from the roof, driveway, and parking lot and allows time to soak into the ground.  
The project cost of close to $90,400 is financed from a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, and sponsorships from Rotary Clubs in Marble Falls, Edinburg, Brownsville Sunrise, Harlingen and Corpus Christi and Districts 5930 (South Texas), 5870 (Central Texas), 5580 (North Dakota, Minnesota and Ontario) and 4130 (Northeast Mexico).
Rotarians from many of the clubs above volunteered with the installation  , maintenance, promoting environmental protection. The ribbon cutting opening of the Bringing Back Baffin Bay Sarita Rain Garden Project is May 9, 2025.
