Project NameGuatemala Literacy Project
Area of FocusBasic education and literacy
Project SummaryThe Guatemala Literacy Project is a network between Rotarians and the nonprofit organization, Cooperative for Education, that improves education for underserved students in Guatemala. The GLP’s mission is to improve traditional and technological literacy in Guatemala’s Western and Central Highlands, where you find one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. The GLP accomplishes this mission with four complementary programs:

1. Spark Reading Program: Enhances primary school teachers’ expertise in reading instruction through professional development, in-class coaching, and materials such as books and workbooks.
2. Textbooks: Provides middle-school students with high-quality textbooks in core subjects. Schools rent books to students for a small fee, creating a sustainability fund for future replacements.
3. Technology Centers: Prepares middle-school students for the workforce through weekly hands-on instruction in standard business software.
4. Rise Youth Development Program: Addresses gender disparities in education by providing life skills, tutoring, and extracurricular opportunities.

The Guatemala Literacy Project, supported by over 850 Rotary Clubs worldwide since 1997, was also featured on past RI President Jennifer Jones's Global Impact Tour as a model Basic Education & Literacy project.
