| Project Summary | Strategic investments by way of Rotary Global Grants focused on Health and Education have been made over time in a critically underserved region of the Guatemalan Highlands. The next step is large-scale economic development for the following reasons (sources included): 1. Net migration 2000-2024 is estimated at 1.4-1.6 million (8-10% of Guatemala’s total population). This soars to 12.5% in the region being served by these grants. 2. Migration to the U.S. robs the most motivated youth from villages 3. It destroys families leaving children without fathers and mothers, brothers, uncles… 4. It presents a threat to the very survival of rural villages The Global Grant "Thrive at Home" (GG2577960) will enable Rotarians and community partners to address this threat. Here is how: I - We will create a comprehensive Economic Development Hub: “Centro de Desarollo Economico de San Martín Sacatepéquez” (CDE). II - Through public/private partnerships, CDE will (1) Establish successful anchor businesses to provide jobs in a rural region, (2) Develop new small businesses, and (3) Provide training that will propel job-seekers and entrepreneurs to success. III - We will create 2,000 new, fair-wage jobs to sustain 10,000 people. |
