I’m sorry to report that we have seen 3 cases of wild polio virus this week, bringing our yearly total to 6.  On the better news, we haven’t seen any circulating vaccine-derived cases this year, and our total for the year for cVDPV cases is zero.
Last week there were 4 positive environmental samples collected in each of Pakistan and Afghanistan, so additional immunization efforts are required.  This is the “low” season for transmission of polio and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is pressing forward with an aggressive push to vaccinate as many as possible.
On a hopeful note, I ran across an article in The New York Times (paid by Bayer) on what we’ve learned from 3 historic diseases.  One listed is polio.  I thought you’d find the article interesting.  Also of interest is the link to the May 2, 1956 article about Dr. Salk’s presentation on durable immunity from his vaccine.
