Rotary Year 2024-2025
September 2024 Edition

This is one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus.  We all know how critical reading and writing are for success in life – for gaining information, communicating, making agreements, etc.

Enhancing Basic Education skills and Literacy are essential in reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.  Improvements can reduce maternal death, improve childhood survivability, and reduce poverty.  They can also enable success in business or a profession.

Projects undertaken by a Rotary Club can address low adult literacy, returning youth to school, enhancing student performance, or supplementing limited school resources.

United in Peace:
A Message from the District Governor
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
As we approach September 21st, World Peace Day, I am deeply moved by the magic we're creating together in our district. Peace and polio eradication are deeply intertwined. The recent emergence of polio cases in Gaza serves as a stark reminder that without peace, our dream of eradicating polio remains unfinished. Peace is more than the absence of conflict—it is the presence of hope, the assurance of health, and the promise of education. Without peace, our dream of a polio-free world remains incomplete.
As Rotarians, our work is not just about service; it’s about building a better, more peaceful world where every child, regardless of where they are, is protected and allowed to thrive. Let us unite our efforts and continue to spread the magic of peace in all that we do.
I invite you to join us at the Dreamcatcher Summit on September 21st in Laredo. During lunch, we’ll hold a special Peace Pole ceremony, symbolizing our commitment to creating a peaceful, polio-free world. Let’s stand together, united by our dreams and our love for humanity.

News Around the District
In early August, I had the privilege of visiting our Rotary friends in Bali, Indonesia. There, my husband and I participated in an environmental literacy project at a local elementary school—a beautiful reminder of how Rotary’s magic knows no borders.
This past month, I’ve had the honor of visiting clubs across our district: McAllen, McAllen Evening, Mission, Rio Grande City, Victoria, Victoria Northside, Portland, Corpus Christi Northwest, Jim Wells County, Downtown Victoria, Rancho Viejo, Historic Brownsville, and the Brownsville Sunrise Club. I also participated in the Adoption Awareness Picnic. Each of these experiences left me inspired and deeply moved by your dedication to service. You are the dreamcatchers, transforming dreams into reality, one project at a time.

AROUND THE DISTRICT

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Rotary and Rotaract clubs are encouraged to partner with local Kiwanis, Lions, and Optimist clubs on a project that will have a long-term impact on their community. (Use the club finder tools to locate KiwanisLions, and Optimist clubs near you.) To get started, work with local social service organizations or government officials to learn what your community needs and how you can plan the most effective project.

Tell your neighbors — and us — about your joint service project by posting on social media with #CelebrateCommunity.

Just 2 polio drops can make a world of difference in the life of a child. A donation to @EndPolioNow helps @Rotary and partners obtain the vaccines, transport, and personnel needed in the fight to #EndPolio for good: endpol.io/give
