December 2022
From District Governor
Fellow Rotarians,
December’s Focus is The Family of Rotary

My last Club Visit occurred at Rio Grande City Rotary on Friday, November 18, 2022. All 52 Clubs, including our newest club, the Rancho Viejo Rotary Club’s New Charter Celebration on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, have been reviewed and I am glad to report 49 of the 52 clubs (97% of all clubs) are functioning well including 15 clubs I consider Excellent Clubs.  The last RI report of new club members cites we have received 40 new members within the District since July 1st. There are three clubs however that are struggling and we possibly will see a reduction of 25 members that are no longer active should these clubs continue to struggle.
This brings me to this month’s theme of the Family Of Rotary. Our 5 Regional Assemblies this year have highlighted the strength of our joining together in groups closely located with one another. Just like last week’s Thanksgiving celebrations for our families while we get together it is fairly easy to note those Rotarians that are not with our gatherings. I have reached out to stronger clubs to help support those not meeting regularly or not actively engaged in service projects.

We can have our AGs, which I pointed out as we met, are more like Area Governors being present with their local clubs and reaching out to help create a collaboration between our clubs for local service projects, joint club meetings, and sharing joint club socials. Each of our Presidents and their Boards might reach out each other for joint gatherings. We are better together than just on our own!
The Family of Rotary does include a whole host of Rotary members that extend past our own clubs. For instance, I am proud of how many students are engaged with very many Rotary Clubs sponsoring Interact Clubs throughout the District. And we have some joint projects at these High Schools with Rotaract Clubs and Rotary Clubs combined. Their is one Interact Club at Los Fresnos Rotary with 184 members! and it is not really unusual to see Interact Clubs that have very large numbers of active students. Our new club models does present a number of creative ways to extend our impact and reach.
But just like our own families, it takes our efforts to nurture and care for our extend families. It can be as easy as each of us reaching out to a friend of ours missing from being with the club or thinking of ways to engage a friend with something we do that can ignite their innermost desire to help provide service to others. Caring for others and seeing our efforts to build stronger relationships is the essence of this month’s theme of the Family of Rotary.
This goes for our Satellites as well. While they are separate operating clubs sponsoring clubs should be aware of helping in their Leadership Development. Again, the Rancho Viejo Club after 3 years of growth was encouraged by the Brownsville Sunrise Rotary as their “parent” to launch out as a new Rotary Club. And so, we are all Family.
Let me switch gears here for a moment. December is also the month we elect our new Club Leaders. So each Club should have its Nominating Committee already searching for the new talent that other members bring to guide our clubs. As those new leaders are selected and existing leaders take their next step forward, please have your Club Secretaries inform us as to your new leaders’ positions and contact information!

Thank you, for each and every one of you!

People of Action helps define Rotary for those who don’t know us. We’re professional, community, and civic leaders who connect with each other and who share a unique perspective and passion for taking action to improve the world. Describing and showing ourselves as people of action creates a personal connection to Rotary and emphasizes the impact we make in our communities.
