From the Desk of District Governor Luis Cavazos
I hope you are well. On behalf of our District Governor Luis Cavazos, please be advised that February is the month in which we celebrate the birthday of Rotary International. One hundred and nineteen years ago, on February 23, 1905, Paul Harris initiated the Chicago Rotary Club, and this visionary step led to the creation of a global service network of business leaders and professionals from around the world, now representing 1.4 million members in 46,000 Rotary Clubs in 529 Districts and 34 Zones.
During February 2024, DG Luis Cavazos is inviting all clubs in District 5930 to celebrate these 119 years with a Proclamation which can be presented at their local city and/or county commissioners' meetings, and also have the clubs conduct a worthy service project that reflects our motto "Service Above Self."
Would you be interested in working with your local city and county officials to have a PROCLAMATION read during the month of February to celebrate Rotary International's birthday? I attach a draft template which you can adjust to reflect the reality of your club or group of clubs within a city or county, and which can be read at a public meeting of City Hall or County Commissioners' Court. For example, in Brownsville, we have five clubs which can be mentioned in the proclamation, while in Mission, only one club would be highlighted. At the county level, we may have multiple clubs within a county, or just one club. Again, the proclamation can be adjusted to fit the situation of the clubs. And remember that the PROCLAMATION is on City or County letterhead, and not Rotary.
If this initiative is a success, we may consider a second proclamation for POLIO on October 24, thus providing two highly visible occasions each year in which Rotary is featured at the city and/or county levels.
Finally, please be advised that in order to proceed with this amazing initiative, I strongly suggest that clubs from each city work together and select a leader of the project for each city and confirm with me before the end of this week in order to support with the material and documents and logos to use on this project. It is important to mention that person in charged of leading this project in their city will be responsible to present and follow up this initiative with their City Hall and/or County Commissioners Court as well as to send to me a report of their stories and how clubs implemented the proclamation and the local services in their community, due date for this report on February 26th.
